Growing up in a bourgeois house in 1980 Peru, nine-year-old Cayetana de la Heros spends a lot of time alone. A morose child, she withdraws into a fantasy world, idolising Peruvian independence heroes from the past and focusing on how they met their end. When she learns her mother is pregnant, Cayetana decides she will die the day the new child is born. Then her grandmother takes her and her cousin to the beach and things start to look up.
